Inclusive Gaming

Video games for blind and visually impaired people

inclusive | innovative | immersive

„Blind people can’t play video games!“

… but actually, why not?

Our vision is for blind and visually impaired to be able to game like everyone else!

We enable orientation by using spatial audio in our accessible video games. The player is guided by high-quality voice over and experiences immersive, auditive game environments.

We are Christian Barth, Florian Köhler and Stefan Wilhelm from the founders team „AVOS – Auditive Virtual Orientation System“ of Leipzig University, funded by the Development Bank of Saxony.

Questions that keep us awake at night:

The game menu of Dinonid. In the background, there are two dino silhouettes, seperated by a giant egg. The menu shows the game options "Start, Accessibility, Credits and Exit" in German.
On the island that represents the play area of Dinonid, yyou can find the dinos Dinja and Schnuppi, eggs, stones and riddle boxes with question marks. In the background, there is water with small floating islands inside. A user interface on the lower right side shows the number of bones and eggs.
The same island as in the previous image, but the background is greyed out and all objects are highlighted in color.

Is it possible to make a game accessible „for everyone“?

Step by step we investigate the question using our child-friendly puzzle platformer „Dinonid“.
The player helps two dinos, Dinja and Schnuppi, to find one another and gets confronted with many obstacles and hurdles on the way!

Using voice over and contrast mode, the game is accessible via audio and visually at the same time. The detailed tutorial also helps non-gamers to find their way around quickly!

Our vision is to also make Dinonid accessible for people with other disabilities and to develop it into a full game!

Note: Dinonid only has a German version right now – stay tuned! 😉

How can I make three dimensional rooms immersive and walkable without visuals?

We investigate that question with our exhibition project „Dreamtrip Experience“.
With the „auditive walking simulator“ we aim to provide atmosphere and a hilarious story for the player without using visuals!
The underlying orientation system also makes it possible to find everything in the game only by hearing.
The project shows how blind gaming can be designed in the future.

The game is made for being played with controller, but you can also use your mouse and keyboard.
Headphones are needed!

We are supported by the Development Bank of Saxony, the SMILE Founders Association of Leipzig University and the Media Production Center of Leipzig University.

Is there something that keeps you awake at night?

Do you want to implement a software idea, make a project accessible or turn processes into experiences using gamification?

We offer consultation, concepts and implementation, a constructive conversation and good coffee. If you don’t like coffee, we can even start directly.

We’re looking forward to get in touch!
